Sandra Bullock’s longtime partner, Bryan Randall, has died at the age of 57 after a private battle with ALS.
“It is with great sadness that we share that on August 5th Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a 3 year battle with ALS,” his family said in a statement, per Fox News Digital. “Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request.”
“We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours. At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan,” the statement con
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, after the famous baseball player who died from the disease in 1941.
There is no cure for ALS, and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is two to five years. However, some people with ALS live for much longer.
“I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children – three children, [Randall’s] older daughter. It’s the best thing ever,” the “Bullet Train” star said at the time.
She also defended their decision not to get married. “I don’t want to say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother,” Bullock said. “I don’t need to be told to be ever present in the hardest of times. I don’t need to be told to weather a storm with a good man.”
A memorial service for Randall will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the ALS Association.
