Celebrated actress Meryl Streep has revealed that she and her husband, Don Gummer, have been separated for over six years. Despite their lengthy union, which began in 1978, the couple remains legally married.
A statement was issued on behalf of the couple by Streep’s representative on a Friday. The statement read, “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.”
Their last public appearance as a couple occurred at the 90th Academy Awards in 2018, during which Streep received a nomination for her portrayal of Katharine Graham in “The Post.” Remarkably, Streep has been observed wearing her wedding ring, even amid their separation.
Throughout their long-lasting marriage, Streep and Gummer upheld a notably private and low-profile approach regarding their relationship. It was a topic rarely discussed in interviews. Nevertheless, during a 2002 conversation with Vogue, Streep shared her views on the essential elements of a successful and enduring marriage. Prior to her marriage to Don Gummer, Meryl Streep was romantically involved with actor John Cazale in the 1970s. She cared for him after his diagnosis with lung cancer until his passing in 1978. In the same year, Streep and Gummer crossed paths and embarked on a six-month courtship before exchanging vows. Their union resulted in the birth of four children: Henry Wolfe Gummer (born 1979), Mary Willa “Mamie” Gummer (born 1983), Grace Jane Gummer (born 1986), and Louisa Jacobson Gummer (born 1991).
