In a twist that adds yet another layer of controversy to the Sanders family saga, Shilo Sanders is now facing a lawsuit from a prominent law firm, which claims he has failed to pay over $164,000 in legal bills.
The suit, filed by Barnes & Thornburg, alleges that Sanders stiffed the firm for services rendered between May and August 2024—a period during which he was entangled in a personal injury lawsuit that had already placed him on a financially precarious path.
According to court documents cited by USA Today, the firm provided legal representation under a formal agreement and invoiced Sanders regularly. But despite repeated attempts to collect, they say he has made no payment. As of now, the balance owed includes $10,967.91 in interest, bringing the total to $164,285.55.
This legal action traces back to a 2016 altercation during Shilo’s time at a Dallas high school. He was accused of causing permanent damage to a security guard who had tried to confiscate his phone. The case simmered quietly until Sanders failed to appear in court, leading to a default judgment of $11 million.
Attempting to sidestep the devastating financial blow, Sanders filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in October 2023. But the security guard, refusing to let it slide, is now challenging the discharge, arguing the debt should remain valid due to the nature of the incident.
Now, with his bankruptcy case under pressure and a civil suit for unpaid legal fees piling on, Sanders’ financial troubles are snowballing.
His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, declined to comment on the lawsuit, leaving many to speculate on the long-term fallout. Notably, this legal turmoil comes at a time when the spotlight is back on the Sanders family—Shilo’s brother, Shedeur Sanders, is set to make his first NFL start for the Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday, a high-profile debut following their time playing together at Colorado.
As for Shilo, the contrast couldn’t be starker. After going undrafted in April, he briefly joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but was ejected from a preseason game and subsequently cut from the roster. What began as a promising path to the NFL is now overshadowed by escalating legal troubles and a mountain of debt.
With millions on the line and new lawsuits cropping up, Shilo Sanders’ off-field battles may prove far more grueling than anything he faced on the gridiron.
