Pop superstar Ricky Martin has filed for divorce from his husband, Jwan Yosef, after six years of marriage.
Martin filed the petition for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The couple has two children together, Lucia and Renn.
In the filing, Martin is seeking joint physical and legal custody of the children. He is also asking the court to order Yosef to pay his attorney’s fees.
Martin and Yosef announced their separation in a joint statement on Thursday.
“We have decided to end our marriage,” the statement said. “We have both mutually and lovingly decided to separate ways. We wish each other the best of luck in our future endeavors.”
“For some time, we have considered transforming our relationship, and it is after careful consideration that we have decided to end our marriage with love, respect, and dignity for our children — preserving and honoring what we have experienced as a couple all of these wonderful years,” the couple said in the joint statement.
“Our greatest desire now is to continue having a healthy family dynamic and a relationship centered on our genuine friendship as we continue the joint upbringing of our children,” Martin and Yosef said in their statement.
The couple met in 2016 and were married in 2017. They have been open about their relationship and their family, often sharing photos of their children on social media.
The “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer met Yosef, a Syrian-born Swedish artist, on Instagram in 2016.
Martin’s decision to file for divorce comes after a year of turmoil for the singer. In September 2022, he was the target of a restraining order filed by an anonymous person who claimed that Martin had stalked and harassed them. The restraining order was later lifted, and Martin denied the allegations.
