Law Enforcement Officials Give Update After Attack At Park

The attack in the Rome suburb of Tor Tre Teste has shaken Italy, not only for its brutality but for what it suggests about a part of the city that has shifted from a quiet meeting place for couples into an increasingly unsafe zone.

The 19‑year‑old woman at the center of the case has now given investigators a stark, composed account of what happened the night she and her fiancé were ambushed by a group of five men described by police as North African migrants.

The couple had parked in a secluded area when the gang approached. According to investigators, the attackers smashed a window, forced their way into the car, and immediately took the couple’s belongings. The woman told authorities that when she reached toward her phone, one of the men seized her arm and pulled her from the vehicle. Her fiancé tried to intervene, but he was quickly overwhelmed and threatened, held back as the assault moved away from the car.

The young woman’s testimony details how she was taken toward a wooded area and warned to stay silent under threat of being killed. Another member of the group kept watch as the crime unfolded.

Her fiancé later said he was also threatened with death if he made a sound, but in desperation, he eventually began screaming for help. It was his cries that drew the attention of a night patrol officer, who called for support and ended the attack.

Three suspects—Moroccan nationals—have been arrested so far, though the search for at least two additional attackers continues. One suspect’s DNA did not match evidence from the scene, but authorities are holding all three as they verify further details. Investigators say fingerprints found at the car match one of the arrested men, and the victim has reportedly been able to identify at least one individual from photographs.

According to police, one suspect has claimed that the group initially intended only to rob the couple and had committed similar robberies before, often targeting vulnerable individuals in nearby areas known for prostitution. The escalation in this case, authorities noted, was marked by a level of violence that has left the community stunned.

The crime has fueled national outrage. Italy’s deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, reacted sharply, calling for chemical castration for those convicted of rape and similar offenses, pointing to the attack as evidence of a broader failure to protect women. The incident comes on the heels of other high‑profile cases that have intensified the debate over migration, crime, and public safety.

For now, police say they are “hopeful” about locating the remaining suspects.
