Turner, 46, vanished Thursday, moments before Virginia State Police arrived at his home—not to arrest him, but to make contact as part of an ongoing criminal investigation involving a man from Wise County. Authorities have not confirmed whether Turner himself was the subject of that investigation, but what began as a routine contact spiraled quickly into a full-scale search and rescue effort.
According to officials from the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Turner was last seen entering the woods near his home. Dressed in a gray sweatshirt, sweatpants, and glasses, he simply disappeared. Since then, drones, K-9 units, and ground teams have combed the surrounding area. Weather grounded aerial searches by helicopter, but the search continues.
Adding to the mystery, an unidentified Wise County Schools employee was placed on administrative leave the following day, in connection with what officials have described only as an “external investigation.” The school district has not confirmed whether that employee is Turner.
What makes Turner’s disappearance all the more jarring is its timing: just before Union High School’s football team, under his leadership, secured a 12–0 shutout victory over Graham High School, preserving their perfect 11–0 season. Turner, a former high school quarterback who led his own team to three state championships from 1994 to 1997, has coached Union since 2011 and was twice named Southwest Virginia Coach of the Year.
