Hollywood lost one of its most popular citizens when Mark Wahlberg decided to move his family from their Southern California home to live in Nevada. He said that he wanted to give his four children “a better life.”
Wahlberg was asked how he balances work and being a father, and he told Sheryl Underwood, the co-host of “The Talk,” that it was his biggest challenge.
“Every free moment that I have, I’m at home,” Wahlberg said during an Oct. 11 interview. “I want to be able to work from home. I moved to California many years ago to pursue acting and I’ve only made a couple of movies in the entire time that I was there,” he said of his decision to move to Nevada.
He and his wife Rhea Durham, share four children: Ella, 19, Michael, 16, Brendan, 14, and Grace, 12.
“So, to be able to give my kids a better life and follow and pursue their dreams, whether it be my daughter as an equestrian, my son as a basketball player, my younger son as a golfer,” he continued. “This made a lot more sense for us.”
The TV and movie star also said that he wanted to build a “state-of-the-art studio” in Nevada and “make this Hollywood 2.0.”
“We came here to just kind of give ourselves a new look, a fresh start for the kids,” he said, adding, “There’s lot of opportunity here. I’m really excited about the future.”
Amid COVID-19, California’s population declined for the first time. According to an Associated Press report, more people have left California for other states than have moved there.
Wahlberg isn’t the first celebrity to leave California. Last May, Katy Perry said that she moved her family to Kentucky. She said that the move was “quite an amazing experience” because “it reminds you that Hollywood is not America.”
