Nightmare Accident Off Coast Of Florida, Yacht Sinks

Two boaters were dramatically rescued from a sinking 80-foot yacht over the weekend after the vessel struck a submerged dredge pipe off the coast of Florida, authorities reported.

The distress call from the motor yacht Atlantis was received around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The vessel had struck an object and began taking on water about three miles off St. Augustine Beach, according to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).

St. Johns County Fire Rescue marine units responded promptly, rescuing the two individuals aboard the sinking yacht. One of the boaters sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition, the USCG confirmed.

Photos captured the dramatic scene, showing the stern of the yacht sinking beneath the water while the bow tipped skyward.

The incident appears to have been caused by the yacht striking a partially submerged dredge pipe piling, St. Johns County Fire Rescue reported.

The USCG expressed gratitude to St. Johns County Fire Rescue, local police, and nearby good Samaritans for their swift coordination in rescuing the stranded mariners. Officials highlighted the importance of the luxury yacht’s emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB), which was properly registered and activated, enabling rescuers to accurately locate the vessel.

Senior Chief Petty Officer Ricardo Santacana, the command duty officer of Sector Jacksonville, emphasized the importance of safety equipment. “With the weather improving and mariners heading out onto the water, it’s imperative for everyone to verify the presence of all necessary safety equipment aboard their vessel. This ensures that responders, as demonstrated in this case, can swiftly locate you and render assistance when an emergency arises.”

USCG officials stated that the owner of the Atlantis is expected to arrange for the salvage of the yacht. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in maritime activities and underscores the critical role of proper safety measures and swift emergency response in ensuring the well-being of those on the water.
