Igloo Recalls 1 Million Coolers Causing Finger Amputations

Igloo is recalling more than 1 million of its popular 90-quart Flip & Tow rolling coolers in the U.S. due to a serious safety risk linked to their tow handles. According to a recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the handles on these coolers can pinch users’ fingertips, posing a risk of crushing injuries, lacerations, and even fingertip amputations.

The recall comes after 12 reports of injuries, some severe, caused by the faulty handles. As a precaution, Igloo is urging customers to stop using the affected coolers immediately until they can receive a free replacement handle from the company.

The recalled coolers were manufactured before January 2023 and were sold at major retailers, including Costco, Target, Academy, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, as well as through online platforms like Amazon and Igloo’s own website.

The sale period for these coolers spanned from January 2019 to January 2024, meaning millions of units have been in circulation for years.

Customers can check if their cooler is part of the recall by looking at the model number and manufacturing year, both of which are located on the bottom of the cooler. A full list of affected model numbers and date codes is available in the CPSC recall notice.

To ensure a swift resolution, Igloo has set up a dedicated webpage where customers can register to receive a repair kit at no cost. The company has also used its social media platforms to spread awareness about the recall, emphasizing its commitment to consumer safety.

“With consumer safety as our top priority, we have voluntarily issued a recall on the 90QT Flip & Tow Rolling Cooler and have provided consumers with a proper course of action that includes a free replacement handle,” Igloo told FOX Business. “Through rigorous testing and proactive steps, we are constantly improving our products to meet the highest safety standards.”

Beyond the U.S., an additional 70,000 Flip & Tow rolling coolers have also been recalled in Canada and Mexico.
