Michael Strahan, former NFL star and current Fox Sports analyst, found himself at the center of a social media controversy over the weekend after he was seen standing with his hands interlocked near his waist instead of over his heart during the national anthem.
The moment took place during a special Fox NFL Sunday broadcast in honor of Veterans Day from Naval Base San Diego, where Strahan’s panel colleagues all had their hands over their hearts. Though brief, this posture was enough to spark criticism from viewers who perceived it as unpatriotic. However, Fox Sports has confirmed that Strahan will not face any punishment or fines, dismissing the reaction as an “internet controversy.”
According to a source who spoke with the Daily Mail, the situation was blown out of proportion and was never intended as a political or unpatriotic statement by Strahan. The source explained that “Michael was in the moment and in no way shape or form objecting to the moment at hand,” emphasizing that Strahan’s stance was simply a personal posture, not a deliberate commentary.
Strahan’s colleagues and fans were quick to defend him, with many pointing to his deep respect for the military, shaped by his father, Maj. Gene W. Strahan, Sr., who served 23 years in the U.S. Army and was a member of the esteemed 82nd Airborne Division.
Michael Strahan disrespected the military during a Veterans Day pre-game show on @NFLonFOX. The great irony is Strahan on a ship surrounded by men and women who would willingly sacrifice their lives to protect his freedom. So, his behavior is not just repugnant, it’s downright… pic.twitter.com/iIXqChfLCW

Strahan’s own social media post shortly after the broadcast underlined this respect. He shared a heartfelt tribute to his father alongside a photograph of him in uniform, expressing his gratitude to all veterans.
“Thank you to all veterans and active service members who courageously risk their lives to protect us every day,” Strahan wrote. “This is my hero, it is also my father, Maj. Gene W. Strahan, Sr.” He concluded by honoring the sacrifices of all service members, writing, “We would not have the safety and freedoms we cherish without you. Thank you.”
Though Strahan has not directly addressed the situation publicly, sources suggest he may avoid further comment, as he doesn’t want to distract from the significance of Veterans Day.
“Michael wants Veterans Day to be for those men and women who deserve it and deserve the praise,” the source stated, adding that further commentary could unintentionally shift focus onto himself rather than honoring veterans.
