Former Olympian Busted In Drug Case

The arrest of Ryan Wedding closes a chapter that reads like a crime thriller, blending elite athletics, organized crime, and an international manhunt that stretched nearly a decade.

Once known as an Olympic snowboarder representing Canada, Wedding is now in U.S. federal custody, accused of leading a violent transnational cocaine trafficking network and ordering multiple murders. His apprehension in Mexico, reportedly after turning himself in at the U.S. embassy in Mexico City, marks one of the most high-profile captures tied to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list in recent years.

Federal authorities describe Wedding as a central figure in a drug operation allegedly responsible for moving roughly 60 metric tons of cocaine into Southern California each year. FBI Director Kash Patel compared Wedding’s role and reach to that of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, underscoring the scale and brutality attributed to the organization.

According to investigators, Wedding operated under the protection of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel for much of the last decade, using stash houses, semitrucks, and a web of shell assets to traffic drugs across North America while laundering enormous sums of money.

Wedding’s criminal history predates the current charges. He was previously convicted in the United States for cocaine distribution after attempting to purchase drugs from an undercover agent, serving most of a four-year sentence before his release in 2011.

Authorities say his operations expanded dramatically after that, culminating in a sweeping 2024 indictment that includes eight felony charges, among them three counts of murder. A grand jury later added the killing of a federal witness who was set to testify against him, raising the stakes of the prosecution even further.

The investigation into Wedding’s network has been extensive. Law enforcement agencies across multiple countries have arrested dozens of alleged associates, while the U.S. Treasury has sanctioned nearly 20 individuals linked to the operation.

Recent seizures tied to Wedding included luxury vehicles, rare motorcycles, drugs, firearms, and high-value art, painting a picture of a fugitive who combined extreme violence with extravagant wealth. Officials have also suggested he may have altered his appearance through cosmetic surgery to evade capture.
