Florida’s political landscape may be in for a shake-up as Casey DeSantis—the state’s First Lady and longtime political powerhouse—reportedly considers a run for governor in 2026. While no official announcement has been made, Republican insiders claim that DeSantis is seriously weighing a bid, fueled by urging from major donors who see her as a natural successor to her husband, Governor Ron DeSantis.
“I have heard donors have been urging her to run and that while it’s not something she has wanted to do, they are causing her to at least stop and listen,” a source told NBC News.
With Ron DeSantis term-limited and unable to seek re-election, the 2026 race is already taking shape. Republican donors at a recent gathering in Palm Beach County openly discussed the possibility of a Casey DeSantis campaign, fueling speculation that her candidacy is more than just a rumor.
As First Lady of Florida, Casey DeSantis has been a highly visible and influential figure, often seen alongside her husband on the campaign trail and playing a key role in shaping his political brand. A former television news anchor, she has proven to be a compelling speaker, a savvy strategist, and a key bridge between Florida conservatives and the broader GOP base.
When asked last year about the growing calls for her to enter the political arena, Casey credited her husband’s leadership as the reason people were excited by the idea.
“I will tell you this, when people talk about me running for governor, I think it speaks highly about the governor himself,” she said on the Conservative Review podcast. “I think when people see me, it is because they are so happy about everything that this governor has done for the state of Florida.”
Despite her public denials, insiders claim that her entry into the race is increasingly seen as inevitable. One source put it bluntly: “She’s going to run. I think at this point most see that. There is a lot to be worked out, but at this point, the rumors are not just that—it’s feeling very real.”
While Casey DeSantis might have strong grassroots and donor support, her candidacy could put her husband back at odds with President Donald Trump.
Trump, who endorsed Ron DeSantis in 2018, later clashed with him during the 2024 Republican primaries. Though tensions have eased somewhat since Trump returned to the White House, a Casey DeSantis run could reignite the feud—especially because Trump is expected to endorse Rep. Byron Donalds for governor.
Given Trump’s iron grip on the Republican base, Casey DeSantis entering the race against a Trump-backed candidate could divide Florida Republicans and test just how much influence the DeSantis brand still carries.
Ron DeSantis himself has repeatedly downplayed speculation about his wife running, telling reporters in May 2024: “If I had to characterize her interest in getting into the political thicket as a candidate, I would say, I would characterize it as zero.”
But as history has shown, political circumstances—and ambitions—can change quickly.
If Casey DeSantis does decide to run, she wouldn’t be the first governor’s spouse to seek office—but she would be a uniquely formidable candidate.
She has spent years developing a deep network within Florida’s Republican circles, and her media background gives her an edge in public communication. Katherine Jellison, a historian who studies First Ladies, noted that Casey DeSantis is far more politically engaged than most spouses in her position.
“She is apparently an exceedingly hands-on political spouse. She is her husband’s closest advisor and often literally shares the stage with him,” Jellison told DailyMail.com.
“She seems to enjoy interacting with the public much more than he does. When she has a speaking role during appearances with her husband, she may actually spend more time talking to the audience than he does.”
In short: if she runs, she’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
