The burger may be square, but Wendy’s latest round of corporate social media takes was anything but vanilla. In a flurry of sharp-tongued posts on X (formerly Twitter), the fast-food giant took aim at pop singer Katy Perry following her brief suborbital flight with Blue Origin’s all-female crew — and the internet took notice.
On Monday, Perry joined Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sánchez, CBS anchor Gayle King, and several other accomplished women in aerospace and science for what was hailed as a milestone: the first all-female flight crew since Valentina Tereshkova’s 1963 solo mission. The Blue Origin voyage lasted 11 minutes and landed safely in West Texas.
But it wasn’t the science or symbolism that had Wendy’s fired up — it was Perry’s triumphant return that triggered a barrage of sarcasm.
When Pop Crave posted the news that “Katy Perry has returned from space,” Wendy’s X account commented bluntly:
“Can we send her back?”
Can we send her back

That was just the opening shot. As users flooded the thread with questions and reactions, Wendy’s fired off a string of replies steeped in pop culture nods and dry wit. When a user asked, “She was only up there for like 10 mins, right?” the account corrected them:
“Don’t short change her, it was 11 minutes.”
She was only up there for like 10mins, right?

Accompanied by a photo of Perry kissing the ground post-landing, Wendy’s added:
“I kissed the ground and I liked it,” a tongue-in-cheek reference to Perry’s hit “I Kissed a Girl.”

The chain didn’t stop there. Responding to a post captioned “The taste of her cherry starship,” Wendy’s jabbed:
“When we said women in STEM, this isn’t what we meant.”
The taste of her cherry starship…

Another user mocked Perry’s dramatic landing photos, prompting the brand to quip:
“She realized there’s no Biggie Bags on the moon.”

Wendy’s online persona has built a reputation for this kind of brash, Gen Z-style humor — especially when aimed at cultural figures. While the exact motivation behind this specific roast of Perry remains unclear, the campaign succeeded in one thing: it made Wendy’s trend.
By Tuesday morning, the fast-food chain was a top topic on X, fueled by fans and critics alike weighing in on the bizarre digital takedown.
Though some users praised the account’s unfiltered tone, others questioned the wisdom of mocking a spaceflight meant to celebrate women’s advancement in science and exploration.
