An 8-year-old boy who went missing while camping with his family in a remote Michigan state park was found safe Monday after a two-day search.
Nante Niemi, a second-grader from Hurley, Wisconsin, was last seen Saturday afternoon at Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park in the Upper Peninsula. He was collecting firewood near his family’s campsite when he wandered off.
More than 150 people, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, and volunteers, searched for Niemi for two days. They used dogs, drones, and helicopters in the search.
The group had focused on a roughly 40-square-mile area within the 60,000 acre park on the shore of Lake Superior, the statement said.
On Monday afternoon, a volunteer search team found Niemi about two miles from his family’s campsite. He was cold and hungry, but otherwise unharmed.
Niemi told rescuers that he had been sheltering under a log during the storm. He had also been eating handfuls of snow to stay hydrated.
Niemi was reunited with his family at the hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.
